Thank you to my company for letting me share my experiences and perspectives on dealing with different clients with my colleagues in the Hong Kong office.

As an agency, it's never easy to deal with different types of clients. Here's what we encounter from time to time:

- Client’s late submission of ad materials and tight deadlines

- Urgent requests

- Out of scope requests

- Need to handle projects from multiple clients at the same time

There are ways to handle tricky situations and requests. But in general, the most important is still tie to the client relationship. Once we have a good client relationship, it makes for a smoother way of communicating and talking more like a partner or like a friend, rather than a "client-agency" relationship.

However, building client relationships can be another difficult topic. In short, there are three things to focus on here:

1. Empathy - I put this first because I think it's the most important. Clients sometimes difficult, but there is always a reason behind their requests. Try to understand where they come from, what difficulties they face, even if you can't solve all their problems, try to understand them.

2. Change the mindset - Business is not just business; a client can also be more than a client. Try to know your clients like a friend. Build relationships from the heart, rather than forcing yourself to do it.

3. Communication - Always two-way. Asking questions, raising concerns, expressing opinion and asking for feedback are all part of communication. Never just take orders from a client, tell them what we think and the reasoning behind it, it also helps clients learn more about your thought process and facilitates overall communication.

Overall, there's a lot more to help build good client relationships. But building relationships takes time, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Treat each client as an individual and be patient, as you would with your friends, family, or partner.
